So I got a load of music on an extarnal HD, and I thought 'I know, I'll
just copy it in to the iTunes music folderm and it'll appear in iTunes.'

Nope. Can I get iTunes to rescan the music folder, and rebuild it's
catalogue/database/whatever?

Cheers

I think I fell into that trap too. Try dragging the new folders onto
the main iTunes list window.

I was going to say that'd be difficult as I now can't remember which
were the new folders, but they'll have similar create dates. Good idea!

You can select the imported material together and either drag and drop
onto the master playlist OR just double click the whole selection to
launch iTunes

iTunes help says :- "Drag your iTunes Music folder (by default, located
inside the iTunes folder in your Music folder) to the Library in the
Source list."

Do you have a new version though ?

I can't find iTumes on the Apple web site......

I only found it when I was looking for help on the CBDB data base.
Didn't find any on that though....

And, while we're on the subject of iTunes, why the hell do I always have
some kind of grief when I'm trying to look up a track name ?

"iTunes cannot get CD track names for songs that were not imported using
iTunes."

What the hell difference does it make ? Why does it make any difference
? Some of the tracks were imported via SoundJam, have I got to do it
again for a Gazillion tracks ? SoundJam seemed to have no trouble with
lookups, iTunes always belly aches.

They way to do it is to change the preferences to where you want the
library to be, then to consolidate the library which moves [1] all your
music to the folder you've told it where you want the music to be kept.

[1] Or maybe copies?
