Is it possible to convert a DCV movie to play on a Mac, if so, how?

If he does, then I'd expect vlc (videolan.org) would play it.
Alternatively Quicktime might play it if you buy the Quicktime MPEG2
component.

I think the suggestion was that you had mis-typed it, not that
the filename was wrong.

Fiddling with the name randomly is not a very good approach. What
kind of movie file is it? Ask the person you got it from.

(Google suggests that .dcv is a "Drivecrypt volume", which might
be a problem.)

Unless it's a dress code violation, even the almighty Google doesn't
know what it is:
