I've acquired an HP Jornada, which appears to be a large and soemwhat
ugly species of hand-held computer. Is there anything useful that can be
done with it? I presume it can't be conencted to a Mac. Perhaps I can
install Linux on it, as it seems to be running Windoze.

It can be connected to the mac with the Mark/space stuff. It isn't
running windows, it is running Windows CE, which is an OS which starts
from the premise that windows is great on a desktop, so it is also going
to be great on a really tiny slow machine.

There are useful things that can be done with it, whether you want to do
any of them is up to you!

Usually shortened to 'WinCE', for reasons that will become clear if you
use it for any length of time.

I've got a 525. It serves as an mp3 player (files from a cf card). Just
about anything else is somewhat beyond it.

My friend's brother just bought a phone jobby running Windows CE and was
telling me how "it's great because it runs Windows". I said - trying not
to tarnish his $SHINY *too* much - that I saw that as a disadvantage,
since I use Macs and deliberately *avoid* Windows. To which he replied -
oddly - that "I don't know much about computers so I feel more
comfortable with Windows; it's only people who know lots about computers
that use Macs". Now *there's* a meme turned upside down [1].

Er... if I turned you upside down that would be the same as rotating you
180 degrees.

If I am not mistaken, your Jornada 540 is based on SH-3 CPU, so you
could try
http://linuxsh.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi

WARNING!!
Porting Linux to PDA will take up a lot of time and is pretty addictive
which can cause you being told off by your other half, so think again
before you decide to do it....

Hi, if it's the hand rather than palm held series they are actually quite nice as an alternative for carting a laptop around. They have a (just) useable keyboard and various built in windoze ce progs.

Connection to a Mac is via the net or CF cards. My 680e jornada (win ce v3.11) uses the same wireless pcmcia card that works in my Powerbook (Wallstreet), free drivers on the net.

Using local hotspots and Yahoo I can transfer docs via email to either my work PC or home eMac (OSX). I've even managed a bid or two on eBay but the browser is limited and slow. Though not fitted with a CF slot the 680e can use a pcmcia adapter to use CF cards as extra mem/storage. I use my Nikon camera to transfer files to the eMac via USB.

The supplied ActiveSync software is a data loss waiting to happen, use the HP utility to backup to CF card!

Regards, Steve.

It is possible (but not very likely) that either PocketMac[1] or
MissingSync might be able to make it talk to the Mac, but then there
would still be the problem of the physical connection. It should have a
serial connector which might make it possible to connect it to a Mac. I
seem to remember having seen it mentioned that some had ethernet
connectors.. (this must be the worst paragraph I ever composed in the
English language..)

[1] was trying to find the list of supported devices in their web site
but their link to it gives me a 404....

Take my advice, this pocket PC is a pile of crap and if you try and
play around with it, it'll put you off PDA's for life!

Being serious, I loved my old iPaq1940 and I wish I hadnt have sold it
when I emigrated to the Mac from PC. No Palm can match a Pocket PC for
versatility, style, features and price (the new T5 doesnt even have
Bluetooth!!!!!) and I'm thinking of purchasing a Dell plus Mark Space
soon so it'll run happily on my G5.

But use this old Jornado and it'll taint you perception of PDA's for
life ... load of crap ... todays PDA's are worth the extra money.

Doesn't it??
That's odd- my (older) T3 does. I'd have sworn that the T5 had
Bluetooth, and I thought it had WiFi too.
In fact, according to the Palmone website, it has bluetooth, and
optional WiFi.

"No Mac can match a PC for versatility, features and price".

And I disagree about the style thing - PPCs are, almost without
exception, fugly.

One can assume from that that noone who currently uses a PDA has ever
used one.

I just got a tapwave zodiac 2 (128Mb, 2 sd slots, bluetooth - 150 quid)
and love it. I have had some pocketPCs (both iPaqs) but one went to my
mum and the other one just works as a gps in the car. Really not a great
fan of the pocketPC.

Mark space is pretty good. I have been impressed with that.

Oi! I had the pre-Jornada name tag version of that, the HP620LX. And a
fine machine it was too, only recently gone eBaywards.

I used to use it as a support machine. Get a telnet client (and an SSH
client these days I suppose) and it's a very handy thing to have around. I
suppose with an appropriate serial adapter it could be useful for looking
at the console ports of various headless servers as well.

Cheers,
Ian
