Hello good people

After buying a used iBook G4 I have decided I would like to format and
reinstall MacOSX. When I insert Disk 1 I am told to restart the
computer to begin the installation. Here is the message I get shortly
after the apple appears:

====================
Kernel Version:
Darwin Kernal Version 8.5.2: Mon Feb 13 16:34:37 PST 2006;
root:xnu-792.8.37.obj1/RELEASE_PPC
panic: We are hanging here...
=====================

And nothing else happens
If I reset the PRAM it then allows me to boot but the installation is
cancelled

Here is a page showing someone has suffered this problem previously:
http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-24094.html

They didn't find a solution so I'm wondering if anyone here can help me
format the HDD and reinstall Mac OS X from the CDs.

Thanks in advance
Mark
p.s. I'm still very green with macs so please bare that in mind if you
reply :)

Are you using correct set of installer disks? If your using a set of
iBook disks they could be the wrong ones, ideally try using a retail
Tiger Install CD if the system had Tiger on it then you need a set of
Tiger Disks...

If you can access another Mac computer, you could use the target mode,
ie connect a firewire cable beween 2 Macs have the other machine up and
running then start the laptop up holding the T button down, the drive
should mount on the target machine...

Use the other machine to erase the laptop drive and format it, then try
again to install from the OS disk....

If this fails come back saying what you have done and what happened...

Hope this helps...

Mike

It's worth trying all of that, but this panic seems to be coming up well
before the PlatformExpert is loaded (which is where the "I've got the
wrong disk" panic would appear, even booting an Intel Tiger DVD in a PPC
Mac can get further than the above panic). It may be worth, if there
are two sticks of RAM in the beasty, switching them around and trying again.

thanks chaps!
it turned out that I was using the installation from my MBP instead of
the ones that came with the iBook. I presumed that a Mac OS X
installation CD would do for any mac.

thanks again

An installation disc will usually work on any machine older than the
machine it was made for, however, the PowerPC and Intel OS X is a vastly
different beast even if it looks the same, and will cause a PPC machine
to KP on boot, the Intel machine knows about the PPC version so doesn't
even attempt to boot it.
